A person's "comfort zone" is termed as such because the zone is comfortable and secure. Existing within your comfort zone will only hold you back on your personal development journey because it will cause you to miss out on new and unknown opportunities that will set you outside.
Coaches consistently push their clients to move out of their comfort zones by reaching out to new people in their field, starting those passion projects they've been waiting on, or taking risky actions that make them a step closer to attaining their goals. After all, changing one's mindset about risk versus reward is hard to do, especially when reaching back into the comfort zone for safety.
1. Check your body for fear signals
Can you remember the last time you were really uncomfortable? What was that like? In which part of your body was it? Was it right there in your chest? Are you having stomach problems? Knowing, therefore, where discomfort manifests in your body can help you become aware of when you're venturing out of your comfort zone. It allows you to put yourself in situations that are challenging, yet constructive for personal growth.
2. Now you say to yourself, ‘I am Fearless’
A disempowering thought will limit us to our comfort levels. One of the ways of replacing those thoughts by empowering one is to take a new perspective toward moving to an action. As you make this shift in your thought process, repeating the mantra “I am fearless” may be used along with the process of picturing yourself doing or accomplishing what you are afraid of to assist in helping you reprogram this disempowering thought pattern and step away from it.
3. Reflect on your most significant achievements again
Courage frequently leads to achievements. Moving forward with belief and confronting our fears can be challenging, yet it reveals our true strength within. Being trapped in comfort makes familiarity our frenemy: a companion we depend on but also holds us back from reaching our full potential. Revisiting our biggest achievements reminds us that it was courage that led us to success.
4. Put into practice the habit of trying something new
Your craving for the familiar is just trying to keep you safe. Let it know that new things are OK, and you'll be bolder by the week. Be kind to yourself; start small. Go out to eat at a new restaurant. Ask someone you have just met to have coffee with you. Go to a networking event. Do something new once a week—say, every Sunday. Let this be a habit, and you will be surprised at how, in a very short time, change seems much less intimidating.
5. Justify the fear
Begin by recognizing the fear that causes discomfort, then engage in a brief mental exercise to justify why you should not move forward with this scary and uncomfortable action. If the justification is accurate, maybe you shouldn't move forward. Nevertheless, if the justification is primarily based on feelings, you may have to keep going and overcome any uneasiness.
There is one final advantage of stepping out of your comfort zone. In addition to the financial expansion you'll achieve by implementing these innovative strategies, you'll also undergo personal development, ultimately cultivating a growth mindset. I'm referring to the identical growth mindset that can assist you in overcoming any obstacle in life.
